SUMMARY:Marine Mammals in the Wadden Sea
DESCRIPTION:The Wadden Sea Day 2015 will highlight the role and population development of marine mammals in the ecosystem of the Wadden Sea World Heritage property and mark the 25th anniversary of the Wadden Sea Seal Agreement. \nTwo seal species and a toothed whale have established remarkable populations in the Wadden Sea. The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina)\, the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) are ecological key-stone species of the area\, but also receive considerable attention among the general public. Current seal numbers in the region are the highest ever recorded and stand for a major success story of these protection activities\, with an impressive recovery from major setbacks such as the two big virus diseases \nThis one-day symposium will provide an overview on the status of the marine mammals in the Wadden Sea World Heritage property. The focus of the presentations will be on general information\, but also on expert knowledge on diseases and threats\, socio economic interactions\, new insights\, while not forgetting a historical view.
