SUMMARY:International Save the Vaquita Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:International Save the Vaquita Day is intended to be an annual event similar to Earth Day\, but with a specific focus on raising awareness and appreciation of the world’s most endangered marine mammal\, the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). Events around the globe direct the attention of people to the plight of this tiny porpoise species\, and what needs to be done to save it from extinction. There are booths\, educational brochures\, inspirational talks\, face painting etc. on hand at events around the world to draw attention to and appreciation of the vaquita\, Mexico’s “Panda of the Sea”. \nThe primary goal is to make as many people as possible aware of the vaquita and its plight\, and spur them to act. The species is nearly extinct\, with few individuals surviving. We will have a simple message for folks about what they can do to help. Secondary goals are to gather signatures for our petitions to the Mexican government\, and also to raise additional funds for future educational and research work on the vaquita. The event is designed to be fun\, as well as educational\, and kid-friendly! \nIn 2023\, the event will once again take place entirely online\, with a 4-hour live stream on YouTube\, Facebook and Twitch.

SUMMARY:Talk: Small Cetaceans Facing Global Challenges
DESCRIPTION:An illustrated talk on “Porpoise Conservation — Small Cetaceans Facing Global Challenges” \nThere are only seven species of porpoise in the world’s oceans. Despite the nearshore habitat preference of most species\, this group of marine mammals is largely overlooked by science and conservation. While there is little known of these elusive marine mammals\, current knowledge indicates that almost half now have a Threatened or Endangered conservation status. Dr. Anna Hall is a local researcher and conservationist based in Metchosin who is working to change the public profiles\, population trajectories and knowledge about the world’s porpoise species. She will present an overview of her global research collaborations\, as well as her local work on the harbour and Dall’s porpoise of southern Vancouver Island. Dr. Hall will also present details on her new Eastern Caribbean collaboration that includes the first ever orca census and a new children’s ocean education program. Her research spans more than 25 years and she has uncovered some of the mysteries of the lives of the world’s smallest cetaceans that she will share in this presentation. \nDr. Anna Hall is a marine mammal zoologist and adjunct professor at Royal Roads University. She has lived in Metchosin since the early 1990’s and has been working on the research and conservation of porpoises for the past 25 years. She leads the Porpoise Conservation Society and is involved with research projects around the world. Her expertise is internationally recognised from her involvement in the conservation and recovery of the world’s most endangered marine mammal — the Vaquita —a warm water porpoise that is found only in the Sea of Cortez\, Mexico. She is also heading a new program on ocean health in the Eastern Caribbean that includes tropical dolphins\, coral reefs and sustainable development.

SUMMARY:International Save the Vaquita Day
DESCRIPTION:What is International Save the Vaquita Day?\nInternational Save the Vaquita Day is intended to be an annual event similar to Earth Day\, but with a specific focus on raising awareness and appreciation of the world’s most endangered marine mammal\, the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). Events around the globe direct the attention of people to the plight of this tiny porpoise species\, and what needs to be done to save it from extinction. There are booths\, games\, music\, free prizes\, educational brochures\, inspirational talks\, face painting\, and several life-size models of vaquitas on hand to draw attention to and appreciation of the vaquita\, Mexico’s “Panda of the Sea”. \nWhat is the goal?\nThe primary goal is to make as many people as possible aware of the vaquita and its plight\, and spur them to act. The species is nearly extinct\, with only <30 individuals left\, and declining at about 50% per year! We will have a simple message for folks about what they can do to help. Secondary goals are to gather signatures for our petitions to the Mexican government\, and also to raise additional funds for future educational and research work on the vaquita. The event is designed to be fun\, as well as educational\, and kid-friendly! \nWhat happened last year?\nIn 2018\, we organized International Save the Vaquita Day (ISTV Day) on Saturday\, July 7th. This event featured 34 booths and other venues at sites in southern California\, various cities in the US\, and all over the world. The venues included 9 aquaria and 12 museums/zoos. There were experts on hand to answer questions\, educational demonstrations\, seminars\, children’s games and events\, face-painting\, passing out of brochures and coloring books\, etc. At one site (Seaport Village in San Diego) there was even live music – the steel drum band Salsa Steel! \nThe primary goal was to make as many people as possible aware of the vaquita and its plight\, and spur them to act. The events were all very peaceful\, and respectful of the Mexican fishing culture. It is estimated that over 26\,000 people were directly educated about the vaquita at the various events on ISTV Day 2018\, with over 250\,000 more educated through social media postings. Our website visits in the week after the event reached a record 173\,476 visits!

SUMMARY:International Day of the Baltic Harbour Porpoise
DESCRIPTION:In 2002\, the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the Baltic\, North East Atlantic\, Irish and North Seas (UNEP/ASCOBANS) declared the third Sunday in May of each year as the “International Day of the Baltic Harbour Porpoise” (IDBHP) in order to raise awareness of the critical situation for populations of the Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena): the only species of cetacean native to the Baltic Sea. \nSeveral studies have recently confirmed that only few of these animals can still be found in the main basin of the Baltic. This significant decline is largely due to human activities. The greatest threat posed is due to accidental by-catch through the entanglement in fishing nets. Other threats include underwater noise\, over-fishing and habitat degradation (for example due to oil extraction). Urgent action is needed to save the Baltic Harbour Porpoise from extinction. \nRaising public awareness plays an important role in supporting effective conservation action. The IDBHP aims to promote public support throughvarious events and exhibitions at museums and scientific institutions around the Baltic Sea. The number of institutions staging events to mark the IDBHP has grown significantly. We hope that\, ultimately\, the IDBHP will be observed by at least one notable institution in every country around the Baltic Sea.

SUMMARY:VSB Sustainability Conference
DESCRIPTION:The VSB will be hosting its fifth district-wide Sustainability Conference this year on May 5th\, 2017 at Eric Hamber Secondary. The day will include keynote speakers\, two workshops sessions\, a zero-waste lunch\, a NGO Fair and Networking & School Planning sessions. \nThe Conference welcomes students\, teachers\, administrators\, and PAC members from all 18 Vancouver secondary schools\, as well as board staff and trustees\, out-of-district attendees\, and elementary school teachers. \nBuilding upon the successes of past conferences\, VSBSC 2017 hopes to: \nCelebrate sustainability inside and outside of the VSB. \nShowcasing environmental action can inspire even more action\, and we want to open the eyes of our community to just how much potential is buzzing around them. \nEmpower youth with the skills and networks needed to execute their ideas. \nIn hopes that this will enable students to tackle projects with a strong foundation\, built by like-minded people before them. \nWe hope to build bridges between youth\, organizations\, and existing sustainability expertise\, in order to strengthen them all through their bonds. \nFacilitate both inter- and intra-school discussion on sustainability goals and post-conference action plans. \nBy providing participants with time to brainstorm within their school groups what sustainable action they would like to see taken at their schools\, we hope to rally students to enact the change they wish to collectively see. We also hope that bringing all 18 VSB high schools together will encourage inter-school support on sustainability projects\, particularly ones that have been previously undertaken by other VSB schools. \nThe Porpoise Conservation Society will take part in the NGO Fair as part of the conference.

SUMMARY:International Save The Vaquita Day 2016
DESCRIPTION:“We are doing everything we can to reverse the Vaquita’s decline\, from online awareness to in-person outreach. One of our biggest efforts has been International Save the Vaquita Day\, which has taken place on the second Saturday of July since 2013. ISTVD is a worldwide celebration of the Vaquita and the people trying to save it\, through tables\, festivals\, and much more. This year it is on July 9\, and we are going to make the event bigger than ever! We will have tables all around the world\, as well as a huge social media effort\, all to create buzz and educate the public about this extremely urgent cause! In 2015 we convinced the Mexican government to ban all gillnet fishing in the Vaquita’s range\, which is amazing news! Now this year\, we are going to have to make sure they flawlessly enforce the ban as well as make it permanent with the aid of Vaquita-safe fishing gear!” \nThe Porpoise Conservation Society will support International Save the Vaquita Day 2016 to raise awareness for this critically endangered species\, with our main event scheduled in collaboration with the Vancouver Aquarium on July 9.

SUMMARY:International Day of the Baltic Harbour Porpoise
DESCRIPTION:In 2002\, the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the Baltic\, North East Atlantic\, Irish and North Seas (UNEP/ASCOBANS) declared the third Sunday in May of each year as the “International Day of the Baltic Harbour Porpoise” (IDBHP) in order to raise awareness of the critical situation of the populations of Harbour Porpoises (Phocoena phocoena)\, the only species of cetacean native to the Baltic Sea.\nThe #IDBHP offers a good occasion to highlight the critical status of the Baltic population of the harbour porpoise and the threats to its survival. Effective conservation measures can benefit the harbour porpoise population\, other species sharing its habitat and the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea as a whole.

SUMMARY:Global conservation of porpoises is way cool because…
DESCRIPTION:In all the world’s oceans there are only seven species of porpoise that exist. Though these little marine mammals are found in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres\, and their distributions are mostly separate from one another – these highly intelligent marine animals face significant conservation challenges. None more so\, than the highly endangered Vaquita – found only in the Sea of Cortez\, Mexico – for which extinction is imminent unless the current conservation efforts succeed. \nPorpoise Conservation Society president Dr. Anna Hall will present an overview of the world’s porpoise species\, from those found in the coastal waters of British Columbia to the far reaches of the Southern Ocean off Antarctica. Porpoise natural history and conservation will be the focus of the talk\, with details of how to get involved in the protection and conservation of these small\, elusive marine mammals. \nAdmission: included in museum admission.

SUMMARY:The Porpoises & Dolphins of the San Francisco Bay Area
DESCRIPTION:Golden Gate Cetacean Research biologists\, Jon Stern\, Bill Keener and Izzy Szczepaniak\, will present the results of their newest research on the porpoises and dolphins of San Francisco Bay\, providing an up-to-date since their last talk for ACS in 2012. The team has been studying two species\, harbor porpoises and bottlenose dolphins\, from shore and boat for the past 6 years.\nThe team has compiled the first photo-identification catalogs for harbor porpoises and the San Francisco Bay bottlenose dolphins\, giving us a window into the lives of individual animals. They will share their observations about the unexpected return of harbor porpoises to the Bay\, and the appearance of bottlenose dolphins off our coast. Learn about changes to the Bay ecosystem that played a role in bringing back porpoises\, the warm water El Niño conditions that brought bottlenose dolphins up from Southern California\, and what this may mean for our coast.\nHere’s your chance to find out the difference between a porpoise and a dolphin\, where to see these fascinating creatures\, and what you can do to help in the study of marine mammals in the Bay.

SUMMARY:Harbor Porpoise Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the workshop is to begin discussion among people studying harbor porpoises in different locations\, with different techniques and foci to (1) discuss similarities and differences between locations (2) develop a framework to quantify how harbor porpoises integrate and are affected by natural and human-induced environmental change. (3) Perhaps see if there is a way to distinguish between responses of porpoises to these types of changes. \nTalks will be 10 minutes\, with time for discussion and questions. We are interested in topics ranging from\, but not limited to: Individuals (energetics\, movement\, acoustics\, mating\, behavior)\, Population (size estimation\, aging\, genetics\, reproduction\, distribution\, mortality)\, community (feeding\, predation) and Ecosystem (oceanographic changes and regimes) levels. We are also interested in topics including human (fishery\, by-catch\, contaminant and noise) interactions\, as well as larger climate change issues. \nWe hope that this will provide an opportunity for those who study harbor porpoises to interact and discuss their research and to put porpoises into a 21st century context where their environment is changing. We hope this will give us all a chance to exchange ideas and maybe set up future collaborations. \nDate and time; Saturday\, Dec. 12\, 2015 830-1730.\nField Trip: Friday\, Dec. 11\, 2015. A trip led by Golden Gate Cetacean Research folks to see Harbor Porpoises from our local huge\, stationary Drone (i.e. the Golden Gate Bridge). Details TBA \nIf you are interested\, have any questions\, or would like to submit an abstract (by Sept. 30\, 2015)\, then send an email to: Jonathan Stern (jonney@sfsu.edu) or Christina Lockyer (christina_lockyer@hotmail.com). \nCost: $80(US) Early bird\, $90 (US) after Sept. 15\, 2015.

SUMMARY:Marine Mammals in the Wadden Sea
DESCRIPTION:The Wadden Sea Day 2015 will highlight the role and population development of marine mammals in the ecosystem of the Wadden Sea World Heritage property and mark the 25th anniversary of the Wadden Sea Seal Agreement. \nTwo seal species and a toothed whale have established remarkable populations in the Wadden Sea. The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina)\, the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) and the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) are ecological key-stone species of the area\, but also receive considerable attention among the general public. Current seal numbers in the region are the highest ever recorded and stand for a major success story of these protection activities\, with an impressive recovery from major setbacks such as the two big virus diseases \nThis one-day symposium will provide an overview on the status of the marine mammals in the Wadden Sea World Heritage property. The focus of the presentations will be on general information\, but also on expert knowledge on diseases and threats\, socio economic interactions\, new insights\, while not forgetting a historical view.

SUMMARY:International Save the Vaquita Day
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Saturday\, July 11\, 2015 has been designated as the Third Annual International Save the Vaquita Day!! This is intended to be an annual event similar to Earth Day\, but with a specific focus on raising awareness and appreciation of the world’s most endangered marine mammal\, the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). Events around the globe will direct the attention of people to the plight of this tiny porpoise species\, and what needs to be done to save it from extinction. There will be booths\, games\, music\, free prizes\, educational brochures\, talks\, face painting\, and several life-size models of vaquitas on hand to draw attention to and appreciation of the vaquita\, Mexico’s “Panda of the Sea”. \nThe primary goal is to make as many people as possible aware of the vaquita and its plight\, and spur them to act. The species is nearly extinct\, with only about 80 individuals left\, and is declining at almost 19% per year! We will have a simple message for folks about what they can do to help (either full support for the Mexican Government\, or support for a boycott and embargo of Mexican seafood – depending on Mexico’s actions in the next month or so). Secondary goals are to gather signatures for our petitions to the Mexican government\, and also to raise additional funds for future educational and research work on the vaquita. The event is designed to be fun\, as well as educational\, and kid-friendly! \nLast year\, there were 18 venues\, in the United States\, Mexico\, Australia\, and Europe. In 2015\, we hope to have booths at all the same venues\, plus many new ones. We will also have the participation of zoos\, aquaria\, and museums (for example\, Sea World\, Long Beach Aquarium\, San Diego Zoo\, and SD Natural History Museum). We also hope to attract media attention\, so that the vaquita is covered on national and local news\, thereby greatly expanding the number of people exposed. Please check our website regularly to learn the latest on the activities planned and venues details. We hope you will attend (or better yet\, volunteer at) an event in your area. \nTom Jefferson / VIVA Vaquita\nsclymene@aol.com

SUMMARY:Rally: International Save the Vaquita Day 2015
DESCRIPTION:The vaquita is the world’s smallest and most endangered porpoise\, found only in Mexico’s northern Gulf of California. Less than 80 individuals are believed to remain and in an effort to save them a rally will take place outside the Mexican Embassy in Washington\, DC\, to bring attention to their plight as part of the International Save the Vaquita Day 2015. \nThe purpose of the rally is to thank the Mexican government for imposing a two-year gill net fishing ban and improving enforcement in the vaquita’s habitat\, and urging the country make the ban permanent and increase enforcement measures. \nWhere – Mexican Embassy\, 1911 Pennsylvania Ave NW\nWhen – July 9\, 2015\, 8-10am\nNearest Metro station – Farragut West (blue\, orange\, silver lines)\nWhat to wear – all participants will receive a free ¡Viva La Vaquita Marina! T-shirt (while supplies last)\nWhat to bring – water\, sunscreen\, enthusiasm!\nRSVP –info@awionline.org \nBackground\nFishing gear is the biggest threat to vaquitas. They often drown after becoming entangled in shrimp nets or in illegal gillnets set for totoaba\, an endangered fish that is also only found only in the Gulf of California. The totoaba’s swim bladder is illegally exported to Asia to make soup and\nfor unproven traditional medicine treatments. Demand for totoaba bladders has recently spiked\, with a single bladder fetching up to US$14\,000.\nAfter years of international pressure\, particularly from the scientific community\, Mexico announced a two-year ban on most gillnets in the northern Gulf of California in April\, and promised to increase enforcement action against the growing illegal totoaba fishery. While\nMexico’s actions are commendable\, experts assert that a permanent ban on nets in the Gulf and rigorous enforcement of that ban are necessary to save the vaquita.\nGroups have recently urged that the Gulf of California World Heritage site—designated as such largely to protect the vaquita and the totoaba—be officially declared “in danger” by the United Nations. There has also been an appeal to the Obama administration to impose trade sanctions\nagainst Mexico to stop the country’s illegal totoaba fishery. That could include a prohibition on the import of shrimp from Mexico.\nA new population survey for vaquita by US and Mexican scientists is scheduled to start in September\, around the time that fishing activity\, and consequently vaquita mortality\, will be peaking. In all likelihood\, the survey will produce disappointing news. \nhttp://www.vivavaquita.org/assets/isvd_dc.pdf
