Abstract

Several anatomical characteristics of the cornea, lens, iris and retina of the eyes of a month-old and an adult harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) were investigated by scanning, transmission and light microscopy.
Also, the refractive power and chemical composition of the eye mucous were determined. The results are compared to those of other cetacean and human eyes, and the ecological significance of the differences is discussed.
